CHORAL ORGANIZATIONS IN AND AROUND LOS ANGELES

Listed for each organization is the group Name, the location of rehearsals, the Contact Phone Number/Contact Person (if any), e-mail address for same and the Choir Director. If available, a link to the groups website is included. The list is not constantly updated and therefore further research may be necessary in order to contact any particular group. Any update information can be sent to me by e-mail at the address at the bottom of the list. In addition, groups seeking choral members can ask to be added to the list by e-mailing the pertinent information. I would also like to request information from the various groups to add to the following listings, namely: group size, repetoire, whether professional, semi-pro, amateur or anything in between. Thanks for your help.

**NOTE: SELF-TAUGHT SIGHT-SINGING COURSE

FOR THOSE INTERESTED IN LEARNING TO SIGHT-SING OR TEACHING SIGHT-SINGING TO OTHERS (particulary the choir directors out there who don't have a lot of time to teach their choir members), I have recently (August 2000) found what I think is a wonderful course called "Sight-Singing Made Simple". It was developed by a Colorado choir director named David Bauguess and is for the student with normal musical abilities a practically if not totally self-teaching program for learning the fundamentals of sight-singing. It is available through Amazon.com and retail sells for only $13-15 depending on whether you get the CD or Cassette. It does not go beyond the very basics but is very understandable, direct, well-paced and organized and makes very good use of the CD/Cassette to aid the student in learning the rhythms and pitches needed. Although letter names for notes are briefly introduced, the course primarily uses solfege syllables(Do, re, mi, fa, so, la, ti) to teach music reading. The author's publication for group use, The Jenson Sight Singing Course, is more comprehensive. I find this approach most intruiging and advantageous in that it initially avoids a very complicating factor (the note names) and emphasizes learning the spatial characteristics of the different intervals as they appear on the staff.

ALERT FOR INERESTED PROFESSIONAL/SEMI-PROFESSIONAL SINGERS

SMALL EXPERIMENTAL CHORAL GROUP FORMING TO PERFORM MINIATURE A CAPELLA MASTERPIECES

I am looking for professional or semi-professional singers (S,A,T,B) proficient in sight singing to form a chamber choir (12-16 people) whose core repertoire will include such miniature masterpieces as Ave Verum Corpus by Byrd, My Love Dwelt in a Northern Land by Elgar, O Vos Omnes, by TomasVictoria, The Blue Bird by C.V. Stanford, Waldesnacht by Brahms, The Evening Primrose and The Succession of the Sweet Months from The Five Flower Songs by Britten, Ubi Caritas by Durufle and similiar works.

Twenty to thirty such miniature masterworks will be studied over time and in depth with the aim of bringing out the quality of the sound and the inherent musicality of the works. The works undertaken will have to be memorized so that the singers will be free to immerse themselves in the aural and emotional character of the music they are creating. I have a passionate desire to work toward combining the singer's natural appreciation of classic musical forms and poetry with the immanent beauty and power of the sounds. My goal is for the group to perform without conductor in the tradition of the Orpheus Chamber Ensemble and Chanticleer with a collaborative style of work being of fundamental importance in the realization of the works.

I have been inspired to create this ensemble because of my love for classical music, my interest in group collaboration and process and my natural penchant for seeking meaning through body awareness, be it in song, dance, meditation, "toning" or other related types of physical activity. In the center of this activity is sound itself which has the power to affect us profoundly on many different levels. Performances will begin as soon as the ensemble desires to bring to audiences the fruits of its labors.

Description by Marcia Armstrong:
"SBMC is a 40-45 member, SATB, 'Professional quality' ensemble. By this I mean that the singers are all volunteer. Auditions are held annually the last partof August - the first part of September and ALL returning singers from the year before must re-audition. This is not a formality. It is in our by-laws and is there to ensure the best quality choral ensemble possible. We sing primarily "classical music" but pride ourselves on a diverse repertoire. We give 4 full length concerts per season and they are all different. We don't want to bore our singers or our audience."
